American who triumphed the last time the Open was at Royal Birkdale, Tiger Woods' closest friend on Tour has revealed the extent of the knee injury which brought Woods' season to a premature close.
The Open can just about survive not having Tiger Woods, and will struggle through with or without the defending champion, but when Colin Montgomerie pulls out of a pre-tournament interview it's a body blow too far.

This is the most open Open ever. Anyone can win - and I'm not ruling myself out at 45. After all, Rocco Mediate darned near won the US Open at my age, writes Colin Montgomerie.

Former champion Sandy Lyle was one of the early casualties of appalling weather at Royal Birkdale, while Ernie Els signed off his worst Open card with a 10-over-par 80 in the first round of the 137th Championship.
